Books
Peter has two books currently in print, both published by Jones & Bartlett of Sudbury, MA
The Essentials of Managed Health Care, Fifth Edition is widely used in post-graduate programs in health care, and is also used extensively in the health insurance and managed care industry itself. It is used as well in other related health industries such as hospitals and pharmaceutical companies. The book also serves as a reference text for consulting and legal professionals, researchers and regulators.
Note: The Fifth Edition remains the most current textbook on the market, but time stands still for no man, woman or textbook, especially a textbook about health insurance and managed health care following passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (the ACA). Dr. Kongstvedt completed the initial revision draft of this book's Sixth Edition, and it will be available by the spring of 2012.
Managed Care: What It Is and How It Works, Third Edition was released in September 2008. This book is used in undergraduate programs, but has found its primary use in training programs for professionals who need to understand the basics of managed health care, but who do not necessarily need to be expert in it. The book provides an overview of the main elements in the health insurance and managed care industry, but does not contain the same level of detail found in The Essentials.
Note: Following completion of The Essentials of Managed Health Care, Sixth Edition, Peter will begin work on updating this book. It is not expected to be available until late 2012 or early 2013.
